Attendance Policy

Tardies

Each student is expected to be on school premises by the first bell – 8:00 a.m.  Students who arrive after 8:10 a.m. are considered tardy, and must check in at the office before being admitted to class.  It is the parent’s responsibility to assure the child arrives promptly.  Students who are tardy miss valuable assembly and/or class time.  If your child is tardy, please accompany the child into the school or send a note to explain the reason for tardiness.

MVCS policy for unexcused tardies for students in Kinder – 6th grades:

First tardy:  first verbal warning
Second tardy:   written warning of second tardy
Third tardy:  second and final written warning of one hour detention, 1 absence, and “0” on ALL class work done before the child comes to class in event of fourth tardy.
Fourth tardy:  Four unexcused tardies equal one absence. Student will receive “0” on ALL class work in event of fourth tardy.

Only four tardies are allowed per semester.  Additional tardies may result in a suspension

MVCS encourages its students to be on time.  Our students’ education is our first priority.  During achievement tests in the month of April, all students must be in class by 8:10 a.m.  Those who arrive after 8:10 a.m. will not be allowed to make up the missed timed segment of the test.

Absences

Each pupil is expected to be in attendance at all scheduled sessions of MVCS.  An attempt should be made to schedule medical, dental, and other appointments outside of class time.  Parents are expected to notify the school and assume full responsibility to confer with the teacher about any missed work.

If a child must leave school during the day, a note from the parent must be sent in advance.  This information must be given to the teacher in the morning so the teacher can plan for the child’s absence.  When a pupil returns to school after an absence, a written note giving the dates and reasons for the absence is REQUIRED from the parent.  The note is given to the teacher on arrival the first day the students returns after an absence.  It is the responsibility of the student/parent to ask the teacher about all make-up work.  Parents should also inform the school and/or teacher whether the student is still under medication.  A zero will be recorded for work missed that is not made up.  Make-up work is not permitted for unexcused absences.

What constitutes excused absences: illness or death in the family.  Extended illness must be supported by a doctor’s note.  Unexcused absences:  all absences not due to illness or death in the family.  Trips out of town – parents must send a written note to the director explaining the planned trip at least one full week in advance or the absence will be unexcused.  Trips that are not family trips or in conjunction with school activities are not excused.   EXCESSIVE, UNEXCUSED ABSENCES WILL RESULT IN FAILURE TO BE PROMOTED OR POSSIBLE EXPULSION FROM MVCS.

Students are allowed 10 days per semester of sick days with no carry over.  If a student leaves school between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., it is considered a full day absence.  If the student leaves from 12:00 – 2:00, it will be considered a ½ day absence.  In case of illness, students have one week from return date to turn in missed assignments.  All absences over 20 days in one school year will result in automatic review by teacher and administration to determine if retention is warranted. (Kinder – Twelfth)

Perfect attendance awards will be given each semester and special awards at the end of the year for perfect attendance.  Regular attendance is necessary if a child is to achieve optimal progress.

Although we expect promptness at the Pre-K level, the consequences that apply to the upper grades do not apply at this level.  It is in the best interest of your child to be part of the day’s opening activities.  All morning classes begin at 8:00 a.m.
